The Kinross Africa Regional Office is located in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, and is responsible for providing senior leadership and back office support to the gold mine sites located in Ghana and Mauritania.

Purpose of role:

In a context of expected continued energy price turbulence, changing regulatory environments, and increasing company demand; this role provides energy (power/diesel and other fuels) expertise and leadership for the Africa region. This individual will be required to work effectively with Operations, Finance and Africa Leadership Team to highlight strategic opportunities, drive competitive cost savings, and Corporate Social Responsibility gains for Kinross.

The position has a strong focus in Tasiast Gas to Power project.

The role reports to the Africa RVP, is based in Las Palmas and requires intense travel to Mauritania Ghana and in addition to Toronto.

Key responsibilities:

Responsible for developing executing energy/power strategies in Africa Region.

Responsible for high value energy agreements: responsible for the Energy projects in the Africa region with the aim of advising Kinross of best energy options, making optimal decisions considering the long run and ensuring projects are run efficiently. Specifically:

-Mauritanian Power project (SPEG)- advise on ways to close this project and look for new sources of energy

-Ghanaian Power project (Genser): negotiation and management of coal gasification project at Chrirano, Ghana minimizing the risks, ensuring contract compliance and a reduction in power price

-Mauritania Fuel project (OMC): negotiate self perform of fuel import and distribution within Mauritania.

General responsibilities:

Create the annual operating and capital budgets for the Energy function, consistent with Kinross’ established financial guidelines and business planning process.

Set specific performance targets, monitor and manage overall performance of the function.

Where required make recommendations to build the capabilities of the team, to enhance the operations ability to achieve corporate energy strategies.

Provide a single point of accountability for the negotiation of power and fuel contracts.

Provide forecast power and diesel/fuel prices for each site and project’s budget and strategic business plans, based on commodity guidance from Finance.

From an energy perspective work with Operations management to adhere to corporate and governmental regulations, in order to maintain a good legal and regulatory standing corporation.

Act as an ambassador for the Africa Region by maintaining effective relationships with key regulators in multiple jurisdictions; monitor and participate in industry regulatory organizations.

Ensure a communication platform exists across the Operations for energy/power related issues.

Collaboratively define and quantify company-wide opportunities for Kinross Africa to reduce energy costs as well as exposures resulting from changes in energy and environmental market regulations.

Continuously strive to identify opportunities with operations management to reduce costs as well as Kinross’ carbon footprint.

Analyze local power markets for new opportunities to drive cost savings, and advise operations management of the strategic implications to their business.

Monitor the potential impact of relevant energy legislation and regulatory actions as well as developments in the industry and power markets to ensure appropriate opportunities are secured. Report on this activity on a regular basis.

Work with regional management to evaluate alternative energy supply for the operations.

Work with Kinross Project Development team to develop the optimum power solution and to secure fuel supply for new capital projects.

Perform other duties as required.


Legislative Requirements:
Spain (EU) work permit required. Mauritanian work permit may be required. 
 
Language: 
Ability to effectively communicate in written and spoken English.  French and Arabic language skills highly regarded but not essential. 
 
Travel Requirements: 
This role is based in Las Palmas, Spain and intense travel required. 
 
Special Skills and Experience: 
- 12/15 years experience in the energy (power, oil) sector
- A minimum of 5 years experience operating in a global environment and as part of a publicly traded company
- A minimum of 5 years experience leading senior personnel, including teams within highly technical functions
- Experience in multiple power markets with both regulated and deregulated government and privately owned energy/power providers.
- Exposure to Mining operations and the provision of energy.
- Exposure in oil and gas, specifically bulk fuel procurement
- Experience in the development, negotiation and management of high value commercial contracts
- Experience in business development of large scale projects
- Experience in dealing with Governments and/or regulatory agencies

- Technical Competency Requirements
- Experience managing government relations and securing permits
- Advanced project management skills, including extensive risk management experience
- Extensive experience developing and managing budgets
- Ability to develop, align and manage organizational strategic objectives and disseminate information to staff in an effective manner
 
Education Requirements: 
- University degree in a related discipline (eg, engineering, economics, science)
- Formal professional designation in an appropriate area of expertise
