Based in Mauritania, Kinross Tasiast is set to become one of the great gold finds of our generation. It is the first mine in a highly prospective greenstone belt, located within an extensive gold system that is largely underexplored.


Purpose of Role
    
The Blast Supervisor will support and manage all Blasting activities on the Tasiast mine. The position reports to the Drill and Blast superintendent in the Mining department and works on a rotation schedule from Tasiast to home country.  

The incumbent must  focus on the basics, consolidate and improve upon the current blast practice and process to allow the mine to operate without having to move equipment out of plan because of inadequate blasted material. The aim is to achieve and maintain blasted inventory to a minable (usable) inventory level of 3 Mton, pumping a daily average of 40 to 50  tons of explosives down the hole to achieve budgeted production levels. 
Additionally must achieve fragmentation to a level of 90/500 with a maximum of 1/1000 (90% less than 500mm with not more than 1% larger than 1000mm in size) with adequate block rotation to improve productivity from current levels.
The incumbent  is expected to spend up to 90% of his/her time in the field to affect simple and sustainable improvement / change where necessary and agreed
It is critical to this role the efficient transfer of knowledge to the local Mauritanian staff ensuring rigorous performance management is implemented as well as succession and development plans are in place with the aim of attaining Kinross Mauritanisation objectives
 
Key Areas of Responsibility & Duties
    
Ensure compliance with safe blasting procedures for both company and contractor staff;
Train, mentor and provision of technical guidance and transfer of knowledge to national Blast Leading Hands, and Blast Crew Laborers in operational best practices, management of explosives and field performance;
Assign crews and equipment to specific tasks in order to meet blasting goals
Assess and continually improve the current blast practice:
- Control of blast design, pattern prep., pattern mark-up and accurate execution of drilled blast holes
- Booster placement in blast hole
- Explosives discharge hose placement in blast hole
- Explosives column height
- Blast hole stemming 
- Reconciliation of explosives waste (contracted explosives provider) on blast patterns
Assess and continually improve the current blast process:
- Bench Standards and Co ordination
- Blast report for each blast, including an evaluation of results
- Blast Schedule
- Blast Designs (tie-up etc)
- Blast Plans (inventory, interfaces)
- Weekly and Monthly Drill and Blast improvement meetings with the contracted explosives provider.
Manage contract explosives provider to ensure timely supply of materials and consistent QA/QC;
Answer queries and handles requests related to blasting which requires problem solving and judgement
Handle and /or assist in activities related to coordinating health and safety programs
Cover for the Drill supervisors as required.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills Requirements:

Languages:
Must speak / read / write English  
French and Arabic language skills highly regarded but not essential

Experience:
Minimum 5 years open pit experience, preferably hard rock
Minimum 3 years drill and blast experience in large open pit operations
Experience supervising teams of a diverse background
Previous African ex-pat experience preferred but not essential
Must have a proven track record working at remote locations

Knowledge and skills
General knowledge in heavy equipment operation
Must be able to adapt to constant shift changes
Ability to communicate effectively with all crew members and all levels of management in a clear and concise manner  and to work with others in a team environment
Self motivated, with trainer coaching skills towards our national workforce
Able to think logically to solve problems and the tenacity to work until a solution is found
Able to work effectively both as part of a team and independently without supervision
Highly effective planning skills geared at reducing inefficiencies and maximising safety
Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions required

Other
Mauritanian work permit is required
