The primary function of the Metallurgical Technician is to perform test work in a safe and efficient manner.   The test work will include; routine and project generated tests.   Each Technician must be taught all aspects of the job, including laboratory safety and hygiene, standard test procedures, and equipment operation and maintenance.   The Technician completes all tasks under the supervision of the Met Tech Supervisor or more Senior Technician while continuously aligning daily functions to reflect Kinross’ values.
 
Essential Functions

1.   Equipment operations – Must become proficient in the safe use of all laboratory equipment including but not limited to; crushers, various screening devices, sample splitters, pH meters, weigh scales, drying ovens, overhead hoists, forklifts, water deionizer, core drill, etc.
2.   Test Work – Collect routine solution samples on the Leach Pads and do routine tests on carbon (size consist, density, hardness, and gold adsorption) and ore (moisture content and size consist).   In addition, test work will be required for various projects to improve or maintain the efficiency of Ore Processing & Mill operations.   Example of such tests will include but are not limited to: Bottle Roll Leach Tests, Column Leach Tests, Shaking Table Concentration Tests, and Mill Flotation Concentration Tests.   Conduct end-of-month sampling / inventory for the Mill and ADR / Dedicated Plant.
3.   Paperwork/Reports – Complete all test log sheets and inspection forms in an accurate and legible manner.   Reports will be written in the standard format. Maintain organized filing system for Metallurgical accounting. Accessing analytical results from internet based programs such as LIMS will be critical to completion of test work.
4.   Training – Conduct classes as required to train Processing personnel on the use of pH meters and how to perform titrations.   
5.   Safety/Environmental – Maintain an inventory of all chemicals in the Metallurgical Lab and ensure proper labeling.   Must be familiar with safety and environmental policies and associated paperwork.   Responsible to perform daily Workplace Inspection & utilize the ACT card.   Handling of cyanide and cyanide solutions is required.   The necessary PPE will be used without fail.
6.   Back up Capabilities – Cross-train as a back- up for the Processing Clerk and must be able to do the daily, weekly, and monthly reports. The Metallurgical Technician must be willing to cross-train in other Processing areas as needed.
7.   Stay current on all S.O.P.’s and task training for the department as well as post orders pertaining to specific duties.
8.   Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
9.   Follow all A.S.T.M. Standard Procedures for test protocol & Laboratory Technician Course book. 
10.     Responsible to manage the site Environmental Health and Safety Management system in his/her areas of responsibility.
11.   Maintain cleanliness and order in the Metallurgical Laboratory (5S standard).
12.     Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct.
13.   Meets or exceeds established performance expectations set by management.
14.   Consistently exercises discretion and judgment in job performance.
15.   Works without risk or harm to self and others.
16.   Punctuality and regular attendance required.
17.   Helps develop other department personnel to perform duties listed above.
18.   Performs other related functions as assigned by supervisor.

1.   Previous metallurgical experience is required.
2.   Accurate and detailed work is required.
3.   Must become site driving certified.
4.   Must demonstrate the ability to self-motivate & work without constant direct supervision.
5.   Must maintain an acceptable attendance, performance and discipline record.
6.   Must ensure the safe and efficient completion of test work and report results in an accurate and timely manner.
7.   Must have a good understanding of chemistry and the ability and willingness to learn.
8.   Must be able to perform maintenance and troubleshooting on pH meters and other laboratory equipment.
9.   General understanding of mining operations including but not limited to; milling & maintenance operations.
10. Must be cognizant of, and remain current on; chemical hazards involved with working with the types of reagents used within the department & mine wide.
11. Working knowledge and skill with P.C. utilizing work processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.
12. Must be knowledgeable in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access & Outlook programs.   Must be able to generate mail messages, pick tickets and work orders on the JDE System.
13. Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
14. Must speak with honesty, integrity, and transparency both internally and externally.
15. Cooperate & communicate effectively and candidly with all fellow employees so that the harmonious working environment is maintained at all times.
16. Demonstrates the ability to promote constructive dialogue and problem-solving initiative.
17. Ability to work independently and also as a member of the Metallurgical team.
18. Skill level testing may be used to evaluate proficiency in the categories above.    
19. Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills.
20. Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
21. Demonstrates strong administrative, organizational and technical writing skills.
22. Must be 18 years old and presently authorized to work in the United States on a full time basis.
23. Requires valid driver’s license.
