The Kinross Africa Regional Office is located in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, and is responsible for providing senior leadership and back office support to the gold mine sites located in Ghana and Mauritania.


Purpose of Role
To strategize, plan, organize and implement Kinross community relations programs/ activities in Mauritania and support those of Ghana in order to maintain effective and cooperative relationships with key stakeholders, mainly the neighboring communities to our mines and sites.

Key Areas of Responsibility & Duties
To lead the development of community relations strategies within the region that are in line with the global corporate responsibility strategy:
Ensures that site responsibility plans are developed, implemented, and integrated into the strategic business planning process at all sites in the region
Helps sites develop stakeholder engagement, community investment, and other community relations strategies, and to set appropriate management objectives in support of those strategies.
Oversees, in cooperation with the site CR leads and site general managers, the preparation of site responsibility plan budgets.
Works with other departments such as operations, security, human relations, supply chain, tax and finance, communications, government relations, and environment to ensure community relations strategies support the overall business plan.
Helps sites and regional management identify emerging community / stakeholder issues and take proactive steps to neutralize emerging threats.
Supports regional project permitting and feasibility study efforts in the areas of stakeholder engagement, social impact assessment, community investment, and other aspects of Corporate Responsibility and Community Relations
Supports regional exploration projects, wherever these are not directly supported by operations CR teams

Support effective stakeholder reporting, including Corporate responsibility reports and other communications:
Helps coordinate collection of CR performance data on monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
Works with communications teams to develop appropriate CR reporting within the region.

Lead and manage a team of community relations professionals:
Builds the capabilities of the team in the region through strategic training, development opportunities, and periodic performance reviews; monitors and adjusts staffing levels according to the business needs of the Region.
Sets performance targets and measures, monitors, and manages overall performance of the function and direct reports.
Ensures there is a comprehensive and effective succession management strategy in place for the function; identifies succession role requirements and high potential talent, and actively develops key talent.

Scope of Responsibility & Complexity
Reports to the Director External Affairs, Africa, with functional guidance from the VP, Corporate Responsibility.
Define and execute priorities and actions as determined collaboratively with the sites GMs and the local Heads of CR
The position will manage other individuals some of whom may be direct reports.
In conjunction with the Director External Affairs, Africa, informs and involves Corporate in major decisions keeping Corporate informed on significant issues

Minimum Qualifications & Skill Requirements
University degree in a related field of study
Additional specialized education of up to 4 years, including master’s level degree or equivalent is considered as an asset.
Minimum of 6-8 year work experience, with increasing levels of responsibility
Bilingualism required both orally and in writing (French and English)
Full proficiency in written French.
Working knowledge of Arabic language is a plus.
Rotation schedule based in Nouakchott, including 40 to 50% presence at Tasiast and with approximately 20 to 30% of working time spent at Chirano, as well as travel to Toronto or other Kinross locations.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, to deliver appropriate messages to internal and external audiences.
Thorough understanding of international standards and best practices as it relates to environment, permitting and social engagement.
Thorough understanding of management system development and implementation.
Thorough understanding of stakeholder engagement and community development concepts.
Experience in managing people in diverse functional / technical areas.

Additional Qualifications & Skill Requirements
Previous experience in the extractive sector preferred
Work experience in Africa preferred
