The Kinross Corporate Head Office is located in downtown Toronto and supports Kinross operations and projects worldwide. Corporate functions include Finance, Procurement, Health & Safety, Human Resources, IT and Investor Relations.

Purpose of Role
 
To provide leadership in geosciences to discover economically viable gold deposits that will contribute to the production, earning and growth of Kinross. To recommend, advise and coordinate detailed phases of various geological/geophysical/geochemical assignments to enhance and add value to exploration targeting and detection. To direct and manage the upgrading and optimization of the value of the portfolio of assets. To identify opportunities for study and provide consultative services and guidance to the application of geology. To represent Kinross or assign others to represent Kinross on various oversight committees for collaborative research projects.




Key Areas of Responsibility & Duties
 Direct geoscience excellence initiatives, drive and support technical understanding of all Kinross exploration targets and ensure adequate resources are applied to investment opportunities:
– Develop and maintain a high standard of geoscience in all aspects of exploration across the organization.
– Provide expert technical support to the regions; advance geologic understanding of Kinross’ exploration projects and mines. Guide the development of business strategy and cultivate support within senior management.
– Provide expert geological review of all company-wide submissions for exploration budgeting/expenditure and annual programs and provide critical analysis to the SVP Exploration.
– With the VPX and RDXs, develop and implement a technical and commercial project ranking methodology to compare, contrast and prioritize investment opportunities worthy of exploration budget allocation.
– Improve exploration rate of success by critically reviewing targets and developing and applying an effective ranking system of targets and projects.
– Undertake periodic reviews of geologic models at operations, ensuring that appropriate and correct data are fed into Kinross G4 models (geology, geochemistry, geometallurgy, geotechnical). Optimize geological models and develop new ideas to identify opportunities for growth.
– Provide high level technical input to project acquisition valuations and apply rigor to potential ounce estimates.
– Direct the compilation and delivery of progress reports and comprehensive project documentation to Senior Management.
– Attend internal Quarterly Business Reviews as required to keep informed with regional mining activities and present global exploration updates



Lead development of geological research and advance the understanding of precious metals deposits and environments to create competitive advantage:
– In conjunction with the local Directors of Exploration (RDX), keep abreast of and develop geoscience research projects pertaining to geological science and exploration technologies. Ensure uptake of new ideas and technology transfer to all geoscientists in the organization. Recommend and manage participation in any appropriate collaborative research programs.
– Oversee technical work undertaken by Technical Directors of Exploration (TDX), ensuring a high standard of data collection and interpretation.
– Liaise with General Managers at operations to ensure that Brownfields targets are appropriate to mining operations and that a high geologic standard is maintained in Kinross mines.
– Oversee the maintenance and security of the Exploration database.



Develop and implement business practices, policies and procedures within the Exploration function that enhance the skills and calibre of the Exploration group and align with the organization’s overall strategy:
– Implement processes, policies, systems, and practices within the Exploration function that maximize operational efficiencies and competitive advantage that are in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations and internal company policies.
– Maintain a high level of HSE in the geoscience group and act as a safety leader in Kinross.
– Act as a change agent and project sponsor for key initiatives; models organizational values, sets the cultural tone, and prioritizes business goals; creates a continuous improvement culture within the exploration and mine geology function.



– Participate in the hiring, training and site selection for geology graduates.  Work with RDX’s and Human Resources to ensure meaningful assignments which are budgeted and programmed.  Oversee the
– Foster a culture of mentoring among geologists at all levels of Kinross and provide technical training. Play a lead role in planning for development assignments and career moves for the exploration team.


Minimum Qualifications & Skill Requirements
 
– Post Graduate Degree in Geology or related Earth Science field;
– 15 years or more related work experience;
– Proven experience managing a team or function within the mining industry;
– Proven leadership abilities and commitment to safety, environment and community;
– Experience in strategy execution for particular region or function;
– Experience identifying and assessing exploration opportunities in a global mining company;
– Ability to travel (approximately 50%) – domestic, as well as international.



Required Technical Expertise



– Extensive knowledge and experience in major gold deposit types, with strengths in greenstone hosted and epithermal deposits;
– Expert knowledge of geological processes and mining operations processes;
– Advanced understanding of industry and professional regulations;
– Ability to develop key relationships via networking and business development;
– Advanced understanding of competitive landscape in operating countries.



Additional Qualifications & Skill Requirements



– Excellent verbal and written communication skills along with persuasive abilities among peers and management;
– Several years of experience in an operational and project environment;
– Additional specialized education or experience in a specialized field of geological research or equivalent capacity;
– Ability to grasp highly complex concepts quickly and break them down into succinct and clear messages;
– Flexibly in a fast-paced environment;
– Working knowledge of a second language, preferably Spanish, French, Russian or Portuguese, is desirable but not mandatory;
– Excellent technical report writing and presentation skills. Very strong communications skills;
– Team player with a strong inclination towards developing co-operative solutions;
